Paying for an AI service with Telegram Stars
What Stars are
By Telegram's own description, Stars are the currency used to buy digital goods and services from bots and mini apps. They can be acquired through in-app purchases via Apple and Google, or through Telegram's official @PremiumBot.
Telegram also states that Stars comply with Apple's and Google's policies on selling digital products, which is why buying them looks like any other in-app purchase on your phone.
How a purchase in a bot looks
- You pick what you are buying inside the bot.
- Telegram shows a standard payment sheet.
- Payment goes through your app store or your Telegram balance.
- The bot receives confirmation and gives you what you bought at once.
Your card details never reach the bot: the payment happens on Telegram's side.
Refunds
Telegram's documentation for developers describes a refund method for payments made in Stars, which the bot's owner can use. Disputes are handled by the bot's owner rather than by Telegram, and bots normally expose a /paysupport command for exactly that.
In practice this means one simple rule: if something went wrong with a payment, write to the service that sold it to you, not to Telegram.
Stars versus a subscription
The difference is less about price than about what happens after the payment.
| Way of paying | What you get | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Telegram Stars | A purchase inside Telegram that works anywhere | Bought via app store purchases or Telegram's official bot |
| App store subscription | Full access to a service's paid features | Renews automatically until you cancel |
| One-off packs | You pay only when you are actually using the service | They run out; you top up yourself |
| Card on a website | Often the cheapest listed price | Check the site is the service's own before typing anything |
When packs make more sense
A subscription is the better deal for someone who talks every day: the price per message drops. But it keeps charging in the months when life gets busy and the app goes untouched.
One-off packs invert that: you pay when you decide to, nothing renews, and a quiet month costs nothing. For conversation, which tends to come in waves, that is usually the calmer arrangement.
How payment works in Companion AI
@CompanionVoiceBot has no subscription and no automatic charges. You buy a pack of messages when you want one, and it does not expire on a schedule.
Telegram Stars work in every country. The first messages are free, so you can try the service before paying anything at all. More detail in the article on pricing.
